A new widget shows what it will become
A new chart no longer opens on graph paper, dotted axes and curved arrows. The editor draws a faint sketch of the chart you're building — bars, a line, a pie, a funnel, a Sankey, a map — with the places to click at its edges, and every chart type now opens on What do you want to see?. A new KPI says Pick a number right where its number will be. And on the dashboard, a widget you haven't set up yet shows what it will become too.
A sketch of the chart to come
Each of the eight chart types has its own sketch, drawn in light gray to the size of the editor: bars with their baseline, a rising line, a cloud of points, bins under a bell, a disc cut into slices, a funnel narrowing, two columns joined by flows, a map of regions. It's a picture of what you'll get, not something loading, so it never moves. Pick a measure and a breakdown and the chart takes its place.
The same two places, whatever the type
What to show is the dashed chip on the left edge, and what to break it down by is the one under the chart: a pie's slices, a funnel's stages, a map's regions. A Sankey has two chips underneath, Where the flow starts and Where it goes. Click one to pick from the list, or drop a field onto it.
The question, on every chart
A blank pie, funnel, Sankey, histogram or map now opens on the same question as a bar chart, with the same suggestions drawn from your data. A suggestion brings its own type, and its glyph shows which. On a plan without Axi, the box under the question opens the recipe's first list: the measures, or a histogram's numbers.
A KPI says where its number goes
A new KPI no longer opens on a dashed box holding a dashed button. Its editor draws the KPI the way the dashboard will — its title, then Pick a number in large gray letters exactly where the number will be, over a faint sketch of the comparison line. Click it to choose the number from the same list as Show, and the number takes its place.
On the dashboard too
A chart or table you've added but not set up yet is no longer a blank card with two small buttons. Behind Pick a measure — Pick columns, on a table — and Ask Axi, a faint sketch of what it will become: a chart of its type, drawn to the card's size, or a table with its header and rows. A KPI draws its tile instead: Pick a number where its number will be, and or ask Axi under it. Either way, one click opens the editor, or hands the widget to Axi.
