A new chart palette

Charts have new colors. Eight jewel tones, all at the same lightness, so the colors of a chart now look like they belong together — and a dashboard reads in one hue until a color means something.

What changed

  • Colors that go together. Blue, pink, orange, sky, indigo, teal, gold and magenta: saturated, but evenly bright, and ordered so neighbors stay easy to tell apart, colour-blind readers included. A pie's first four slices are distinct even where every slice touches.
  • One color per dashboard by default. A chart with one measure is always in the lead blue, so charts side by side no longer take a different color each.
  • Green and red keep their meaning. They're no longer used as plain series colors: a chart with many colors never paints a series red. They come first in the color picker instead — with yellow and gray — and a yes/no field shows yes in green and no in red.
  • Axi colors with intent. It keeps to the palette, colors what went well in green and what went badly in red, and puts a budget or a target in gray beside the actual.

Charts whose colors you picked yourself keep them.
